The Purification Ceremony Festival of Katsuragake Shrine is held on the second Saturday of each December.
In this festival, men - especially those of so-called “critical year” ages (yakudoshi) in the Buddhist tradition - bathe in the pristine waters of the Nagara River from the right bank of the Chusetsu Bridge to purify themselves and offer up prayers for personal achievement.
The purification ceremony is performed 3 times from: (1) 3:00 p.m. (2) 7:00 p.m. and (3) 10:00 p.m.
